This post is a list of all the herbs that are connected to hair growth or another hair improvement – strength, color, volume, etc.
I’ll add my personal notes, for the methods I tested on my hair.
I live in Eastern Europe, so it makes sense to add mostly herbs that grow around here.
Remember one thing if you decide to give any herb a try.
Herbs and natural ingredients are not instant solutions. You have to be patient and be persistent in this. Think of it as a long-term investment – you’ll need to invest more time, but the results will last for a long time.
1. Nettle
Nettle is extremely rich in vitamin A, C, K, iron, silicon, omega-3, and pantothenic acid – a magical combination for your hair and scalp!
Nettle is recommended for hair loss, as well as to stimulate growth and improve blood circulation in the scalp.
The herb is super effective on the oily scalp and can reduce dandruff.
How I use Nettle for my hair?
It is best to use fresh nettle, but dried nettle is also very useful. To prepare the mixture, you need to take a few spoonfuls of nettle leaves and pour them into 500 ml of boiling water, boil on low heat for about 15-20 minutes, strain and pour into a container with a dispenser.
Spray your hair with this mixture every morning and evening, store it in the refrigerator for no more than 3-4 days, then prepare a new one. The hair treatment lasts for two weeks, and after resting for 7 days you can resume again.
Other than that I drink 150 ml. of nettle tea 3 times per day, before every meal.
2. Coltsfoot (Tussilago farfara)
This herb has long been established as a savior in hair loss.
Coltsfoot can be used in the form of masks, infusions, and also taken internally in the form of tea to bring the body the necessary useful vitamins and minerals.
- Applied coltsfoot as follows: take a tablespoon of the herb, pour it into a glass of boiling water, leave for two hours.
- Rinse your hair after each wash.
You can combine the plant with nettle, burdock, and oak bark. Such a combination will be most effective in alopecia.
3. Equisetum (horsetail, snake grass, puzzlegrass)
Horsetail is a powerful weapon against hair loss – The chemical composition of horsetail contains components that have a beneficial effect on hair:
- Silicic acid – stimulates the formation of collagen and proteins, strengthens curls, gives elasticity
- Tannin – enhances growth, conducive to combating dandruff
- Ascorbic acid – suitable for brittle and damaged hair
- Malic and oxalic acid – have antiseptic action
- Carotene – participates in the regulation of sebaceous glands, gives curls shine and smoothness
4. Lovage (Levisticum officinale)
The decoction of herbs against hair loss on the basis of Lovage soothes the scalp, has an antimicrobial effect, rich in aromatic oils.
This aromatic herb is absolutely harmless, it is used for rinsing the hair, for preparing homemade masks in combination with clay, henna, and other Indian herbs.
5. Saw Palmetto
Saw palmetto (Serenoa repens) is a palm plant that grows along the southeastern coast of the United States and South America. Its fruits are rich in bioflavonoids, phytosterols, and unsaturated fatty acids. Its main action is to slow down the production of the enzyme 5-alpha reductase, thus preventing testosterone from being converted to dihydrotestosterone (DHT).
DHT is the main factor of male pattern hair loss. It makes the hair follicles to miniature and totally fade with time.
There is the drug finasteride, which is proven to block the conversion of testosterone, but its side effects are not worth the risk.
On the other side Saw Palmetto will not only do the same job, but it’ll also add additional benefits to your health like:
- Stimulate the libido and the reproductive system
- Protects the prostate and helps reduce the amount of hyperplasia
- Improves appetite, digestion and absorption of food.
- Strengthens the immune system
